As part of the Victorian stage of the Primavera del Prosecco, cultural, artistic and tourist initiatives will be promoted, with a focus on local gastronomy, art and cultural and nature walks through our hills.
Vittorio Veneto
Vittorio Veneto is one of the most recent cities of the Prosecco Hills. It was born in 1866 from the union of the ancient towns of Ceneda and Serravalle. Today it is an important city of art due to its civil and religious architecture, the quality of its squares and due to the number, variety and value of the historic-artistic and ethnographic public collections.
Piazza del Popolo is the heart of the town, appeared after the union of the two towns. There are the Town Hall and the Monument to the Fallen on Piazza del Popolo. In the town of Ceneda you can find the Museo della Battaglia which tells the story of the Great War through the multimedia and non-multimedia emotional installations, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, seat of the Diocese of Vittorio Veneto, the castle of S. Martino from the Lombard era, the Diocesan Museum and the church of S. Maria del Meschio, where the splendid Annunciation by Andrea Previtali is exhibited.
Serravalle, which is in the northern part of Vittorio Veneto, was powerfully fortified by barbarian kings and princes and in 1174 it became a fief of the Da Caminos. Its evocative Piazza Flaminio is framed by a series of Venetian palaces and villas dating between the 15th and 17th centuries, such as Villa Bianchi Rosada Altoè, Villa Rosada Marini called Casa Rossa and Palazzo Todesco. The Loggia della Comunità, which today houses the Cenedese Museum, has the bell tower embellished with one of the oldest clock faces in Italy and Europe. The sacred places retain a particular charm here. Several of them are the Duomo di S. Maria Nuova which houses an altarpiece by Titian and the Pieve di Sant’Andrea di Bigonzo, which is the oldest church in Vittorio Veneto (13th century) and the mother church of Serravalle before the cathedral was built. Its rich internal decorations can be dated between the 15th and 16th centuries.
An important role for the city is played by the Meschio river, around which history, nature and traditions wind. It is possible to discover it by following the 5 km cycle/pedestrian path along its course. This path offers unique views of Vittorio Veneto and its ancient buildings, old spinning mills and characteristic “Meschet”, hydraulic works built by the people of Serravalle to contain the river after the disastrous flood of 1598. The nature trails of Monte Altare and S. Augusta are also interesting. The first part of the climb, that leads to the Sanctuary of Sant’Augusta, consists of a short monumental staircase that continues with a pleasant cobblestone path overlooked by small chapels named after the Roman basilicas built as votive offerings in 1630 at the end of an epidemic of pestilence.
